The Entrance Examination Phase

Universities admit PhD scholars primarily through two routes:

  1. National Level Exams (Exempted Category): Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET / CSIR-NET / GATE / CEED or hold fellowships like JRF are usually exempted from university-level written tests. They proceed directly to the interview stage.
  2. University Entrance Tests (PET): Candidates without national-level scores must appear for the PhD Entrance Test (PET) conducted by the respective university. The syllabus generally consists of 50% Research Methodology and 50% subject-specific knowledge.
